Waterbuck (Kobus spp.)

Overview
The waterbuck is the largest species within the Kobus genus, known for its robust build and sexual dimorphism. Males are typically larger, measuring 177–235 cm (70–93 in) in body length and weighing 198–262 kg (437–578 lb), while females are smaller and lighter.

Key Features:
Size: Males stand about 127 cm (50 in) at the shoulder, while females reach 119 cm (47 in).

Distinctive Coat: Shaggy reddish-brown to grey coat, darker in males, with long, shaggy neck hair.

Odor: Males secrete a greasy, musky substance, especially when excited, which repels predators and waterproofs their coat.

Horns: Males have long, spiral horns (22”–39”), which curve backward and then forward.

Facial Markings: White muzzle, light eyebrows, and a cream-colored “bib” on the throat.

Fun Fact:
Waterbucks get their name from their affinity for water. They are often found in wetland habitats and are excellent swimmers.

Conservation Status: Least Concern.

Waterbucks are common in Africa’s savannas, grasslands, and wetlands, where their distinctive appearance and odour make them easily recognizable.
