Sable Antelope

Overview

The sable antelope is a striking, powerfully built antelope known for its curved, ringed horns and bold colouring. Males are larger and darker than females, reaching up to 140 cm at the shoulder and weighing around 235 kg. Females are slightly smaller and chestnut to dark brown, while males darken to black with age.

Both sexes have sweeping backward-curving horns—upward of 40” for Bulls. Sable have white underparts, cheeks, and chin, contrasting sharply with their dark flanks and black facial stripe. They live up to 19 years in the wild and are found in woodland savannas, often grazing in open areas near water.
