Giraffe (Giraffa spp.)

Overview

The giraffe is the tallest land animal on Earth and one of Africa’s most iconic species. Easily recognized by its extremely long neck and legs, horn-like ossicones, and unique coat patterns, it’s also the largest ruminant.

Adult giraffes stand between 4.3 and 5.7 meters tall (14–18.7 ft), with males generally taller and heavier than females. Males can weigh up to 1,930 kg (4,250 lb). Despite their towering height, giraffes have relatively short bodies and excellent all-round vision thanks to their large, side-facing eyes. They also have strong senses of smell and hearing and can close their nostrils to block out dust and insects.

Giraffes are social animals, often seen in loose, shifting herds. Females and calves form the most stable bonds, while males may form bachelor groups or roam alone. They inhabit savannas, grasslands, and open woodlands where they browse on leaves, especially from acacia trees.

Their towering presence, graceful movements, and gentle nature make giraffes a favourite among safari-goers and wildlife enthusiasts.
