Overview
The common reedbuck, also known as the southern reedbuck, is a medium-sized antelope found across 14 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Males weigh up to 68 kg and grow distinctive forward-curving horns up to 45 cm, while females, weighing around 48 kg, lack horns.
Larger and more muscular than their mountain cousins, common reedbucks have light brown coats with paler necks and faces. They prefer tall grasslands, wetlands, valleys, and savannas, feeding primarily on grasses.
Typically found in small groups of up to six, they are territorial but not aggressively so. Dominant males control mating rights, and young males form bachelor groups until they are ready to compete for territory. Though breeding occurs year-round, births follow a gestation of about 7.5 months. Reedbucks are known for their high-pitched alarm calls and relaxed approach to territory boundaries. Despite being widespread and classified as “Least Concern” by the IUCN, they face threats from habitat loss and poaching.
