Common Duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia)

Overview
Also known as the Grey or Bush Duiker, the Common Duiker is a small, adaptable antelope found throughout sub-Saharan Africa, thriving in savannas, hills, and even near human settlements—anywhere with enough vegetation for cover.

Adaptable and Widespread
Its success comes from versatility: it eats a wide range of food, including leaves, fruit, flowers, insects, small animals, and even carrion. Able to extract moisture from plants and fruit, it can go long periods without drinking water.

Behaviour and Breeding
Common duikers are active both day and night, often becoming more nocturnal near people. Males are territorial, using scent glands to mark boundaries and preferring open vantage points to rest. Females prefer thick cover. Breeding occurs year-round, with one fawn born after a 6–7.5 month gestation.
