Blesbok (Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi)

Overview
The blesbok is an antelope species native to South Africa, easily identified by its striking white blaze across the face—“bles” meaning “blaze” in Afrikaans.

Appearance
Blesbok males and females look very similar, both weighing up to 85 kg. They have distinct white facial markings, divided by a brown horizontal band above the eyes. Both sexes have ringed horns, with females having slightly slimmer ones.

Conservation Status
Once nearly hunted to extinction, the blesbok population has rebounded due to protective measures since the late 1800s. Today, their numbers are stable—estimated at around 240,000.

97% live on private land, largely due to their commercial value and compatibility with standard fencing.

3% are found in national parks.

Also seen in zoos worldwide, though in smaller numbers.
