Overview
The roan antelope is one of Africa’s largest antelope species, with males weighing up to 300 kg and females up to 280 kg. They stand 130–140 cm at the shoulder and are easily recognized by their reddish-brown coat, black-and-white facial markings, erect mane, and backward-curving ringed horns—upward of 30” for Bulls.
Often mistaken for the darker sable antelope, roan antelope prefer open woodlands and grassy savannas, where they graze on mid-length grasses. They live in small herds of 5–15 led by a dominant male. Fights for dominance are common, with rivals clashing horns while kneeling.
